Before You Travel to Azerbaijan

Your nationality, passport type, travel purpose and intended stay determine your entry requirements. Check our Eligible Countries, Visa Requirements and Visa Types guides before applying.

Your Pre-Travel Checklist

Before departure:

  • Check that your passport and any required visa are valid for your journey.
  • Confirm your accommodation details and arrival arrangements.
  • Review your airline's baggage rules and check-in requirements.
  • Keep accessible copies of important booking and travel information.
  • Check current customs rules for medication, currency and restricted items.
  • Review travel advice relevant to the regions you intend to visit.

Do not assume that every ASAN e-Visa application requires a hotel reservation, bank statement or return ticket. Check the requirements for your particular journey.

Our Required Documents guide explains how to prepare passport information for an electronic visa application.

Arriving in Azerbaijan: Airport and Entry

At Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, follow the signs for passport control, baggage collection and customs. Keep your passport and relevant entry documents accessible.

Check customs requirements for what you carry, particularly medicines and restricted goods. Do not assume that an item permitted at home can be brought into Azerbaijan.

Getting from Baku Airport to the City

Aero Express: Airport buses connect Terminals 1 and 2 with Baku Railway Station, near 28 May metro station.

Official airport taxis: Use the designated airport taxi service and collection area.

Ride-hailing services: If booking through an app, check current availability, authorised pick-up points and the app's instructions before requesting a car.

Confirm the route, payment method and expected fare before a taxi journey. Check current bus departures rather than relying on an old timetable.

Accommodation and Registration Rules

Foreign nationals and stateless visitors generally need accommodation registration if their total stay exceeds 15 days. For citizens of Kazakhstan, the threshold is more than 30 days.

Where required, the registration application must be submitted within 15 days of entry, or within 30 days of entry for citizens of Kazakhstan. These deadlines run from arrival in Azerbaijan; do not wait until the threshold has passed.

The hotel or receiving property owner is responsible for submitting the required application and passport copy. Visitors can also apply directly through the State Migration Service's registration channels. Ask your accommodation provider for confirmation that registration is complete.

There is no state fee for this registration. Failure to register within the required period can lead to administrative penalties.

After changing your place of stay, registration at the new address is generally required within five working days of arrival there. A specific exception covers temporary stays in another dwelling belonging to the owner of the dwelling where you are registered. Do not assume that moving between hotels in the same chain qualifies.

Registration does not extend your visa or permitted stay. You must still leave within your authorised stay unless the authorities grant permission to remain longer.

Getting Around Azerbaijan

Baku has a public transport network that includes the metro, city buses and taxis.

Metro and City Buses

The Baku Metro connects many parts of the capital. Engineering works and route changes can affect journeys, so check the operator's current service status before setting off.

The BakıKart system covers metro journeys and participating bus services. Check payment options before boarding; arrangements can differ between services.

You can buy a card from BakıKart machines at metro stations and bus stops, and top it up at BakıKart or MilliÖN terminals. For Aero Express, card machines are available near the bus stops outside the airport terminal exits.

Taxis and Intercity Travel

Ride-hailing applications are commonly used in Baku. Check that the vehicle and registration match your booking before entering.

Intercity buses and trains serve regional destinations, including Ganja. Check current routes and timetables before arranging onward travel. Verify international border access separately; a visa does not establish whether a particular crossing is open.

Allow extra time for mountain roads and changing weather.

Money, Currency and Payments

Azerbaijan's national currency is the Azerbaijani manat (AZN). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Baku's hotels, shopping centres and larger restaurants. Cash remains useful for markets, smaller businesses, some taxis and rural destinations.

ATMs are available in major towns and cities. Exchange money through banks or authorised exchange facilities.

  • Carry modest amounts of local cash.
  • Check exchange rates and bank conversion charges.
  • Keep cards secure and review transactions.
  • Check restaurant bills for an included service charge before tipping.

Tips are discretionary; an advertised service charge is a separate matter.

Language, Internet and Communication

Azerbaijani is the official language. English is often available in Baku's international hotels and tourist businesses; Russian is also understood by many people. Outside the capital, a translation app and a saved accommodation address can help.

SIM Cards and Mobile Internet

Buy local SIM cards through operators or authorised outlets. For a local SIM or eSIM, check the operator's passport or identification requirements, phone compatibility, coverage and package validity.

SIM subscription registration and handset IMEI registration are separate processes. Mobile phones brought into Azerbaijan must be declared to customs at the border on arrival. Customs declaration and IMEI registration are separate procedures; a customs record is required for subsequent IMEI registration. If using an imported phone on a local subscription, check the applicable device registration requirements and deadline. The IMEI registration rules exempt international roaming with a foreign operator's SIM.

An eSIM is not automatically a roaming product: check which operator provides it. Download offline maps before regional journeys; Wi-Fi and mobile coverage may be limited in remote areas.

Best Time to Visit Azerbaijan

Choose your season around your destination and activities; coastal and mountain conditions differ.

SeasonMonthsTravel highlights
SpringMarch–MayCity sightseeing, cultural experiences and flowering landscapes
SummerJune–AugustCaspian coast, seaside activities and mountain escapes
AutumnSeptember–NovemberComfortable sightseeing, countryside visits and seasonal scenery
WinterDecember–FebruaryMountain resorts, snow activities and winter city breaks

Spring: March to May

Check local event arrangements if your visit coincides with Novruz celebrations.

Summer: June to August

In Baku and lower-lying areas, plan longer walks around the heat and carry sufficient water.

Autumn: September to November

Pack layers for regional journeys: a comfortable day on the coast does not predict mountain temperatures.

Winter: December to February

For Shahdag or Tufandag, check resort operations, snow conditions and road access before travelling.

Local Culture and Practical Travel Tips

Food and Hospitality

Local dishes include plov, dolma and kebabs; tea is a familiar part of hospitality. Ask about ingredients if you have allergies or dietary restrictions rather than relying on a dish's name.

Respecting Local Customs

Dress respectfully at places of worship and follow instructions displayed on site. Ask permission before photographing people or entering private areas. Avoid photographing military or security installations; restrictions can apply around sensitive locations.

Safety, Health and Emergency Information

Keep valuables secure and use established transport providers. Before regional excursions, check weather, road access and current government travel advice for your exact destination.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance remain a danger in former conflict areas in south-western Azerbaijan. Follow local restrictions and authorised routes. Never approach or touch suspicious objects; report them on 102 or 112.

Specific travel warnings apply to parts of the Armenia-border area and former conflict districts. Their geographical scope matters: check the current guidance rather than assuming that every border area, including Nakhchivan, has identical restrictions.

Medical Assistance and Emergencies

Keep these emergency numbers accessible:

  • 112: Emergency situations.
  • 102: Police.
  • 103: Ambulance.

Medical facilities outside Baku are limited. Serious illness or injury can require medical evacuation, even from the capital. Choose insurance covering your planned activities, treatment and any necessary evacuation.

This is a travel precaution, not a universal ASAN e-Visa document requirement. Check rules for any medication you carry, and keep your insurer's emergency contact details accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I keep accessible on arrival?

Have your passport, relevant entry documents and accommodation address ready. Save arrival transport details offline in case mobile internet is unavailable.

Can I use my bank card in Azerbaijan?

Often, especially in Baku's hotels and larger businesses. Carry manat for smaller purchases and places that do not accept cards.

How can I travel from Baku Airport to the city centre?

Use Aero Express towards Baku Railway Station or the designated airport taxi service. For app bookings, confirm availability and authorised pick-up instructions.

Do I need to register my accommodation?

Generally, if your total stay exceeds 15 days, apply within 15 days of entry. For citizens of Kazakhstan, a stay exceeding 30 days requires application within 30 days of entry. Do not wait until those periods have passed; confirm completion with your hotel or host.

Is English widely spoken in Azerbaijan?

It is often available in Baku's tourist businesses, but less consistently elsewhere. Save key addresses and use a translation app when needed.

Which season is best for sightseeing?

Spring and autumn are often comfortable for city walking. Use local forecasts when planning mountain trips, whatever the season.

Do I need a visa to visit Azerbaijan?

That depends on your nationality, passport and travel circumstances. Check the relevant conditions in our Eligible Countries and Visa Requirements guides before applying.
