British citizens holding suitable passports can apply for an Azerbaijan ASAN e-Visa. The usual permission allows one entry and a stay of up to 30 days during its 90-day validity. Check the nationality status and passport type shown in your document before applying, as UK residence and other British nationality categories are not necessarily equivalent to British citizenship for this purpose.
Check the nationality status shown in your British passport
A passport issued by the United Kingdom can require more precise description than the phrase “UK passport” in an enquiry. Check the actual nationality status and document type before using guidance written for British citizens. The FCDO also frames its Azerbaijan advice around travellers using a full British citizen passport.
If your passport states a British nationality status other than British citizen, have that exact status and document assessed before choosing an ASAN service. Use the wording in the passport so that the review addresses your actual category without assuming acceptance or exclusion.
The same distinction applies to UK-issued non-national travel documents. A document's place of issue and a person's nationality are different pieces of information. Describe the actual travel document during the initial review; the ASAN nationality list is not a blanket acceptance list for everything issued in the UK.
UK residence is a separate question
Someone living in Britain may hold another country's passport. Their ASAN eligibility needs checking against that nationality and document, not against their home address or a UK payment method. Conversely, a British citizen living abroad can still be applying with a British citizen passport.
Where another person arranges the journey, make clear who is travelling. The organiser's nationality should not be carried into the applicant's fields. Their useful role in correspondence does not make their passport a substitute for the traveller's identity evidence.
For dual nationals, select the passport that will be used for Azerbaijan before completing the record. ASAN requires the nationality selection to correspond to the travel document, and regards the e-Visa as invalid if a different passport is used for travel. Keep the chosen document's details and page together throughout preparation.
A UK Emergency Travel Document is not an ASAN substitute
FCDO guidance expressly states that a UK Emergency Travel Document cannot be used to apply for an Azerbaijani e-Visa because the electronic system does not recognise ETDs as eligible documents. Do not order an ordinary-passport ASAN service on the assumption that an ETD can fill the same role.
More generally, document suitability should be resolved before selecting a processing speed. An urgent timetable concerns assessment of a suitable application, not an override of document restrictions. The passport and eligibility questions provide general context while a specific document issue is reviewed.
Prepare the British citizen passport record carefully
ASAN requires passport validity extending at least three months after the e-Visa expiry. Check the actual visa period when applying that reference. FCDO separately advises visitors to usually have six months from arrival and two blank pages; distinguish that broader visitor advice from the electronic application's visa-expiry calculation.
Enter names, number, birth details and document dates from the passport using the form's current instructions. If a saved booking contains an old number, return to the current document rather than preserve the booking's version for convenience. Clarify any uncertain field before submission.
Attach a readable identification-page image of the same booklet. ASAN identifies an unreadable passport photo-page attachment as a rejection ground. Open the final saved image, not just its preview, and confirm that reflection or compression has not obscured the information the reviewer needs.
Check that the visit fits the permission
The 90-day validity window and the stay of up to 30 days are separate conditions. The stay must remain inside validity, so an arrival near expiry does not automatically allow another full month afterwards. Compare intended arrival and departure with the actual issued dates before using the result.
Single-entry also means the document is not reusable merely because the first visit was brief. An itinerary involving departure and return needs its permission considered rather than treated as one continuous allocation of days. Share the intended pattern during review if it is not a simple single visit.
Standard official processing takes three working days; Urgent takes three hours, including non-working days and holidays. ASAN advises applying at least the corresponding interval before arrival. Private review, payment and checking the result require additional practical time outside official assessment. Once granted, inspect and print the visa, then carry it with the application passport.
