New Zealand citizens can apply for an Azerbaijan ASAN e-Visa for a suitable short visit. When deciding when to apply, work from your expected arrival in Azerbaijan rather than the date you leave New Zealand. This is especially helpful if your journey includes connecting flights or an overnight stop.
Check your arrival date across connecting flights
Look at the arrival shown for Azerbaijan after all connecting legs, not just the first departure or the date a booking was purchased. A journey can span more than one calendar day. Use the itinerary's actual dates rather than apply an assumed time difference or a fixed number of travelling days to every route.
If several people have different connecting arrangements, check their arrivals individually. A shared hotel reservation does not prove that everybody reaches Azerbaijan on the same date. Give a helper the relevant itinerary for the actual applicant rather than assume the lead traveller's journey supplies every answer.
Check what changes when a connection is rearranged
A schedule change may move the arrival date even where the original departure remains familiar. Review the updated itinerary before final submission and again before travel. Keep the latest information with the application record so that an earlier booking does not continue to supply the date by default.
After issue, compare the revised arrival with the visa's actual start and expiry. A private itinerary update is not an amendment to the permission. If the new journey falls outside the issued dates, obtain the appropriate instructions before relying on the existing e-Visa.
Examine the departure from Azerbaijan too. The normal electronic visa allows up to 30 days of stay within a 90-day validity window. The visit must fit both limits; a later arrival does not extend the document's printed end, and the 90-day window does not permit a 90-day stay.
Give official processing its own place on the timeline
ASAN publishes Standard issue within three working days and Urgent within three hours regardless of holidays and non-working days. Applications must be made at least the corresponding period before arrival. Count from the official application stage, not from the moment travel planning or private correspondence began.
Allow earlier time to confirm the passport, prepare readable evidence and resolve any unclear information. Where assistance is used, suitability review and payment arrangements precede official submission. A long flight does not remove those preparation tasks or make the fastest package a guarantee that everything will be resolved before departure.

Choose the passport before comparing expiry dates
Use the New Zealand passport intended for Azerbaijan for names, number, nationality and dates. An earlier application or saved travel profile should be checked against the current booklet. If renewal is planned, settle the replacement before submitting a file linked to a number that will not be used.
ASAN requires at least three months of passport validity beyond the e-Visa's expiry. Our passport-expiry FAQ distinguishes that reference from the end of a holiday. The visa may remain valid after the proposed visit, so a comparison based only on the return itinerary can miss part of the requirement.
For multiple citizenship, ASAN requires nationality selection to correspond to the travel passport; the e-Visa is invalid if the application document differs from it. Identify temporary, emergency or non-national categories separately before buying ordinary-passport assistance. Nationality eligibility does not decide acceptance of every possible document category.
Prepare evidence that remains clear when shared
Open the saved identification-page image that will be submitted. Check that the photograph is clear and the names, number and dates are legible, with no glare, blur or missing edges. ASAN warns that an unreadable photo-page attachment leads to rejection, even when the typed details are accurate.
Prepare the requested accommodation and contact details alongside the intended arrival. Use an email address that will be monitored during preparation and travel. If another person handles correspondence, agree how the official outcome and any issued e-Visa will reach you while arrangements are still being finalised.
