Irish citizens need a visa to visit Azerbaijan and can apply through ASAN using an eligible passport. Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs expressly says an Irish passport card cannot be used. Take the passport required for this journey, even if the card is sufficient for other trips you regularly make.
Use your Irish passport book, not your passport card
The passport card and passport are different travel documents. Do not use the card's number or image in place of the passport's identification page, or assume holding both makes their details interchangeable. Prepare the application from the document that will actually be presented for the Azerbaijan journey.
If the passport is being renewed, resolve that before applying. A saved scan of the old document may no longer describe the number or expiry of its replacement. ASAN's published conditions say the application document must match the travel document used; an approval should not be assumed to transfer automatically to a new passport.
A person resident in Ireland is not necessarily an Irish citizen. Where another national passport or a non-standard travel document is being used, assess that document rather than select Irish nationality because of an address. Genuine multiple citizenship also requires a consistent choice of passport for the application and entry.
Calculate validity from the visa expiry
The ASAN passport condition is at least three months of validity after the e-Visa expires. Use that end date for the calculation, not just the departure date of the holiday.
Check the issued or intended visa period rather than count only from the last night of a short holiday. If travel dates change or the document's expiry is close to the limit, calculate again and obtain clarification before relying on a rough six-month estimate. A short stay does not shorten the passport condition to a few months after departure.
Passport validity and permission to stay are different checks. A long-valid passport does not allow a visitor to remain beyond the visa, while a visa cannot correct an unsuitable or mismatched travel document. Both need to fit before the journey begins.
Know what the ordinary e-Visa authorises
The normal single-entry ASAN permission is valid for 90 days and allows up to 30 days of stay within that window. The 90 days are not a stay allowance. Read the start date, expiry, permitted days and entries on the actual approval instead of relying on the email saying it was issued.
A single-entry visa is not a reusable permission for a holiday involving departure and return. Establish the further-entry arrangement before booking another arrival in Baku. ASAN's conditions say a new electronic application is made after leaving the country; buying another while still inside is not an assumed way to extend the current visit.
An e-Visa is a visa, not a generic electronic travel authorisation that can be treated as interchangeable with another country's system. Its document, purpose and stay conditions apply. It does not authorise paid employment or replace the proper permission for work, study or residence.
Prepare the information before selecting urgency
Have the current passport, a clear identification-page image, intended arrival, accommodation and monitored contact email ready. Compare the name, nationality, number and dates with the passport itself. A booking profile, residence-card number or shortened personal name should not override the document.
Review companions individually, including different nationalities and unusual documents. A family booking does not create shared eligibility. Prepare the passport copy before submitting the form and ask for clarification of any field you cannot interpret.
For an emergency or unusual document, confirm ASAN suitability before selecting an ordinary-passport package. Identify the document category in the initial request so that payment is not requested on an untested assumption.
What the processing period does and does not mean
ASAN describes standard issue within three working days and urgent issue within three hours, including non-working days for urgent issue. The clock follows successful official submission. Time spent obtaining a passport, checking identity information, clarifying a private service or arranging payment comes earlier.

A passport-card-only enquiry needs the correct passport before a visa service can be considered. Payment cannot make that card acceptable. If your passport is being replaced or your itinerary is uncertain, settle those details before requesting application assistance. Only the competent authority decides visa issue and admission.
Make the passport copy useful to the reviewer
For an Irish passport application, use the booklet's identification page rather than an image of the passport card. Inspect the saved image before uploading: the photograph should be clear and the number, names and dates legible. A clear-looking thumbnail does not always reveal glare across a field.
ASAN states that an unreadable attached photo page can lead to rejection. If the copy is poor, replace it before payment rather than expecting the reviewer to reconstruct missing information from typed answers. The scan and the form should support the same identity.
Keep control of the application email
ASAN sends application, payment and decision notifications to the email entered in the form. Check the address and use one you can monitor while preparing the trip. If another person is helping, establish how you will receive the actual decision and issued document.
A private service acknowledgement is not an official approval. Keep the messages, but open the e-Visa itself when it is issued and compare it with the passport. A payment confirmation does not show that permission has been granted.
Final checks before using the e-Visa
Compare the passport number, nationality and identity details, then read the visa dates and entry allowance together. A changed booking does not amend the document. If the intended arrival or departure moves, check the revised plan against the existing limits.
Print the e-Visa and carry it with the matching passport booklet. Do not replace that booklet with the passport card or assume a renewed passport inherits the old permission. Where there is a discrepancy, obtain the appropriate official instructions before travelling.
If an application is refused, read the reasons provided by the authority. An urgent service or a document review does not guarantee a different decision. ASAN says its payments are not refunded on refusal; any consultancy service conditions should be explained separately before a customer chooses to pay.
